Day 1: Mpumalanga Highlands

Upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you will be met by your tour representative and transferred to Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate, located in the peaceful Dullstroom countryside of the Mpumalanga Highlands. This picturesque area is known as the fly fishing mecca of South Africa and attracts anglers from across the world. The town of Dullstroom retains much of the original architecture from the early 1880s and quaint stores line the main street. Dunkeld is an oasis of calm in an already calm and magnificent forest with many recreational facilities that include horseback riding, biking, and fly fishing. Between the many activities offered on the estate, you can also enjoy the picturesque landscape or just sit beside a log fire with a glass of red wine. You will find the most breath-taking scenery, doubtless the reason that this area is often compared to the Scottish Highlands. Overnight: Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate or similar

Day 2: Mpumalanga Highlands

An early morning coffee and then, taking a packed breakfast with, you head out to enjoy the day following the Panorama Route, stopping first at Elephant Whispers in Hazyview where you can enjoy personal and educational interactions with these huge, wild animals. After lunch, you will find yourself staring out of God’s Window at the canyons that seemingly stretch forever and the waterfalls, and indigenous forest nearly 3000 feet below. The Lisbon Waterfalls, named after the Portuguese who, in the late 1800s, panned for gold in the area, plunges over 300 feet into the ravine. View the intricate network of large, otherworldly potholes, tunnels, and whirling pools at Bourke’s Luck Potholes. These bizarre shapes in the sandstone were formed over millennia at the mouth of the canyon by the raging Blyde and Treur Rivers swirling and crashing together. Visible on the other side of the northern edges of the Drakensberg mountains and shaped like traditional African huts are the iconic Three Rondavels, once known as the Chief and His Wives. From there, the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world and largest green covered canyon in the world opens out before us before we return to the hotel for dinner. Overnight: Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate or similar

Day 3: Mpumalanga Highlands

After breakfast, you will move across to the Humala River Lodge deep within the Songimvelo Game Reserve. ‘Songimvelo’ means ‘we are conserving nature’ in the siSwati language. This park forms part of the nearly 170 000-hectare Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Conservation Area straddling the northern border of Swaziland and the south eastern border of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. It’s a World Heritage Site as it has the best-preserved volcanic and sedimentary rock formations in the world which date back well over 3 billion years and are decorated with some of the world’s oldest Rock Art. Afternoon tea will set you up nicely for your first sunset game drive to experience first-hand the twilight beauty of the African bush, and her wild creatures. Then it’s back to the lodge for dinner accompanied by the unparalleled orchestra and chorus of the wild African night, making your first night in the bush unforgettable. Overnight: Humala River Lodge or similar

Day 4: Mpumalanga Highlands

Rising before dawn is a necessity if you want to see wildlife as they are most active in the cool early mornings or late afternoons. Strong coffee and one of South Africa’s iconic snacks, homemade rusks, will be served to see you through your game drive to brunch. Game drives are the best way to experience the reserves spectacular scenery and extraordinary wildlife. And each game drive is unique and unpredictable. After brunch you are free to spend the day at leisure, or being pampered in the Bush Spa. If you’re feeling more energetic, you could go swimming, take a riverside bush walk, explore the ancient rock formations near-by, or visit the ancient village ruins and San rock paintings. You could even battle the Komati River’s wild Yellow Fish if fly-fishing is your thing. Afternoon tea and then a sunset game drive is topped off with sundowners under the Southern night sky awash with stars; glimmering constellations not seen in the Northern Hemisphere. Back at the lodge, you will be treated to a mesmerising Swazi Dance Performance before a delicious dinner. Overnight: Humala River Lodge or similar

Day 5: Magaliesberg Mountains

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the Magaliesberg and after check in, the Harties Cableway will carry you to the top of the Magaliesberg Mountains. While enjoying lunch on the mountain, you can take in the scenery of the Hartbeestport Dam, the valley and the surrounding mountains thanks to the panoramic views. A trip to the Lion and Safari Park will get you up-close and personal, even hand-feeding some of Africa’s best-loved animals. At Lesedi Cultural Village you will be escorted through the many cultural hallmarks of the Rainbow Nation – architecture, rituals, clothing, music and dance. Your dinner here tonight is an eclectic African feast and you are transferred to your hotel for check in.. Overnight: Seasons Sport Leisure & Spa or similar

Day 6: Sun City

An early start, after breakfast this morning, will get you transferred to Sun City so you can enjoy the rest of the day choosing from the multitude of facilities - casinos, golf, water parks, shopping, and even adrenaline-extreme sports. Early check-in, if the room is available, otherwise bags will be held in secure storage at reception. This resort complex boasts the world-class Valley of the Waves water park and two world-class golf courses designed by the legendary Gary Player. You can navigate the overwhelming number of choices by speaking to the hotel concierge or by visiting the Welcome Centre. Overnight: Sun City Cabanas Hotel or similar

Day 7: Pilanesberg National Park

After breakfast, continue to enjoy Sun City for the morning until you are transferred to Bakubung in the Pilanesberg National Park which is a certified malaria-free game area. On arrival you will enjoy a cocktail and lunch. After some rest, an Afternoon Tea (light luncheon) is served just before your first sunset game drive with knowledgeable and experienced field guides in this savannah plain where game and Big 5 sightings are the norm. On your return from the bushveld, dinner is served and afterwards you can linger to listen to the field guides share their bush experiences or simply sit and watch the stars traverse the African sky. Your stay is fully inclusive of two safari games drives (one at sunrise and one at sunset), breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, soft drinks and selected alcoholic beverages. Overnight: Bakubung Bush Lodge or similar

Day 8: End Of Itinerary

Wild animals are mostly active in the early mornings and late afternoons which is why we start your day before the sun rises. In an open 4x4 vehicle, your field guide will seek out game as well as indigenous flora and fauna. There will be a coffee and muffin stop and on your return to the lodge, breakfast is served. Rest of the day at leisure until you are transferred to the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for an onward flight home or the next leg of your vacation.
